Dodgers 4, Phillies 2: Justin Wrobleski’s career-high 9 Ks gets backed by 4 dingers to impress Clayton Kershaw

The day off fortunately didn’t do much to cool off the Dodgers, perhaps thanks to motivation provided by Clayton Kershaw‘s attendance. They smashed four homers against the Phillies to back an amped up Justin Wrobleski, who upped the heat to deliver seven great innings while setting a career high in strikeouts. A 4-2 victory that felt like more.

Zack Wheeler is back from injury and has been rolling for the Phillies, but the Dodgers gave him a rude welcoming early on to take the early advantage.

In each of the first three innings they hit homers off him, with Freddie Freeman (8th) going deep in the 1st, Max Muncy (13th) getting him in the 2nd, and Shohei Ohtani (10th) going deep in the 3rd.

Wheeler had not given up anything else at that point, and in the 4th he finally avoided a homer and got a clean frame. But in the 5th it was more of the same as Will Smith led off with his 6th homer of the year to make it 4-0.

He worked around a walk and a single later in the frame and ended his outing with a clean 6th.

On the other end was Justin Wrobleski, who was geared up for this start and sitting 2-3 MPH over his normal range.

He started the game by striking out the side in the 1st, and then took just 11 pitches to get through the 2nd.

He got another strikeout in a clean 3rd, but had his perfect game ruined in the 4th on a Kyle Tucker error in right for two bases. No matter, as he got the other three hitters just like the others, including another strikeout.

Wrobo followed that by striking out the side for the second time in the game in the 5th, but with two outs in the 6th (including another K), Kyle Schwarber broke up the no-hitter by smashing a home to make it 4-1.

No matter, Wrobo got the last out of the 6th and then got a 1-2-3 frame in the 7th to complete his dominant outing.

A career high in strikeouts and sitting ticks higher in velocity: 7 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K, 88 Pitches.

Dave Roberts went to the pen in the 8th, starting with Edgardo Henriquez. He gave up a one-out double and then gave up a two-out single to Steward Berroa that made it 4-2 Dodgers.

That led to Alex Vesia entering for Schwarber, and he got him to take an ugly swing to strikeout and keep the lead.

Tim Mayza kept the Dodgers quiet in the 7th and gave up just a single in the 8th, so it was Tanner Scott protecting a two-run lead in the 9th. And he did protect it in 1-2-3 fashion … low stress.

======

37-20, which is very good. That’s six in a row and 13-2 in the last 15.

The series continues tomorrow with a matchup of young, developing starts in Roki Sasaki and Andrew Painter, and they’ll begin at 4:10 PM HT/7:10 PM PT/10:10 PM ET.
