Mariners @ Dodgers July 30, 2026: Roki Sasaki looks to build on a couple strong second-half starts, Shohei Ohtani out of the lineup

The Dodgers (68-40) got another win in an Eric Lauer start to even up their series with Seattle, taking the middle game 4-2 last night. Edwin Diaz returned and held on to a three run lead despite giving up a lot of loud contact and an RBI double, and now the Dodgers have a chance at a series win. Roki Sasaki gets the ball for the Dodgers and Bryan Woo starts for Seattle.

Sasaki is coming off a pair of excellent starts in New York. Roki kicked off his second half against the Yankees and held them to an unearned run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He followed that up against the Mets last Friday and allowed a run on three hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts. Chad wrote about his bigger glove after the start against the Yankees (there’s a joke about his glove getting a BBL here, shoutout Tanner Scott).

Woo starts for the Mariners in the midst of the worst season of his career. He has a 4.37 ERA in 20 starts, but his 3.19 FIP is actually better than his FIP last season (3.47) when he posted a 2.94 ERA and finished fifth in Cy Young voting. Woo’s been very hit and miss this season, allowing five or more runs in six of his 20 starts and allowing two or fewer in 11 of his starts. He’s coming off a rough start in Texas, where he allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings. Woo’s faced the Dodgers once in his career back in 2024 and gave up two runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings. He only allowed one hit through six shutout innings, but gave up a Gavin Lux homer and hit a batter before being pulled in the seventh. That run scored on a Max Muncy homer off Yimi Garcia, who I definitely remember used to be a Mariner.

Dustin wrote earlier about lineup construction and how the Dodgers should bat Tommy Edman second instead of the struggling Andy Pages. Mission almost accomplished as Edman bats first tonight with Shohei Ohtani getting the night off.

He was dealing with some soreness after last night’s game so he gets today off but is reportedly available to pinch hit. Roberts being very confident that Ohtani will be back tomorrow definitely fills me with confidence (didn’t he say that about Will Smith when he was scratched like three months ago and has yet to play).

Teoscar Hernandez serves as the DH today and Enrique Hernandez gets his first start since being activated on Tuesday. He’s in left and hitting ninth. For the Mariners, old friend Luke Raley gets his first start of the series after pinch running on Tuesday and pinch hitting last night.

Blake Snell checked off a milestone in his rehab, completing four innings for Ontario last night.

Dave Roberts said the Dodgers have yet to decide whether Blake Snell will need another rehab outing or not after he went four scoreless innings with Ontario last night. One of the factors: the Dodgers do have an opening right now in their 6-man rotation.

Snell allowed one hit and struck out nine in his four innings on 60 pitches. He could slot back into the rotation as the Dodgers are a starter short right now and don’t have another day off until next Thursday.
