Because the weather sucks everywhere outside of California (mostly), it appears there’s weather inbound to Cincinnati, which will likely cause (at least) a delay in the start of the game, if not a complete postponement.

It looks like by 6 p.m. AHT, there’s a 100 percent chance of rain, and it continues through the night. Now, unless the Dodgers and Reds play a 1:50 minute game, it doesn’t appear this game will get in. Thursday’s game is a 9:35 a.m. start, so a doubleheader that day seems more than likely. But Cincinnati is also expecting rain in the form of scattered thunderstorms through Thursday, so who knows? Update: There it is.

Sad news in the baseball world on Tuesday, as former Dodger and Athletic Bob Welch died of a heart attack. He was 57 years old. Welch pitched with the Dodgers for 10 years. I always associated Welch with the A’s, seeing as I was 5 years old when he last pitched with the Dodgers and live in Northern California, but he spent the majority of his career with the Dodgers.
The Dodgers drafted him No. 20 overall in the 1977 draft, and he won World Series titles with the Dodgers in 1981 and the Athletics in 1990. He was traded to the A’s in December of 1987 with Matt Young to acquire three key pieces to the 1988 championship team — Alfredo Griffin, Jay Howell and Jesse Orosco.
President and CEO Stan Kasten, from the Dodgers’ official press release:
“The Los Angeles Dodgers are saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Welch. He was one of the greatest competitors to wear the Dodger uniform. Dodger fans will always remember his confrontation with Yankee great Reggie Jackson in Game 2 of the 1978 World Series, when the 21-year-old rookie struck out Jackson to end the game.”

The 2-time All-Star and 1990 Cy Young Award winner (27-win season) had a long and distinguished career. He had a 3.47 ERA, 3.71 FIP, 36.1 fWAR and almost 3,100 innings pitched. His top Baseball Reference similarity score is that of Orel Hershiser. Rest in peace, Bob.

To the surprise of no one, Adrian Gonzalez and Dee Gordon return the Dodgers’ lineup on Tuesday against the Reds. The Reds get a pretty adequate hitter back from the disabled list today in Joey Votto. So, that’s fun.
If the game is played, Josh Beckett will try to continue his great start against a more formidable Reds’ lineup. Votto is a perfect 3-for-3 against Beckett in his career. But hey, this one might not even get underway, so we’ll see what happens. I love the rain, just not when it interferes with my baseball — especially in June.
