You didn’t really think a day would go by without roster moves, did you? Of course not.

Obviously, at least one of those moves was expected, since Scott Baker was going to have to get onto both the 40- and 25-man rosters somehow. Joel Peralta heads to the 15-day DL to make room on the 25-man, which isn’t all that surprising since we’ve known about his “dead arm” for a few days now. To get him onto the 40-man, Brandon League and him bum shoulder have been moved to the 60-day DL, which also makes sense.
But less expected was the announcement that the team had placed Yasiel Puig on the disabled list due to a sore hamstring. While disappointing — I think, somehow, he’s actually underrated despite all the attention — the truth is that he probably should have been there a week ago, rather than trying to (unsuccessfully) push through the injury. If it’s a surprise now, it’s only because they’d been so stubborn about doing it that it seemed like they never would. Now, he’s already missed 5 games, and he’ll be out until the second week of May. Carlos Frias comes up to take his place, bulking up the bullpen for a day in which they may be needed heavily, and possibly being available to start if Brandon McCarthy can’t.
Not having Puig isn’t great, but it’s not like more Scott Van Slyke is a bad thing — not, of course, that he’s starting today — and unless Alex Guerrero (who is starting today) is strictly a third baseman now, which is a problem given this roster, seeing him get a crack in the outfield would be worth the adventure. Howie Kendrick also gets a day off, with Justin Turner at second. The adventures never seem to end.
