Finally: It’s official. There’s so, so much here to unpack, but let’s start with the details.
Coming to Los Angeles:
- FROM ATL: SP Alex Wood, SP Bronson Arroyo, RP Jim Johnson, RP Luis Avilan, IF Jose Peraza, cash
- FROM MIA: SP Mat Latos, IF/OF Michael Morse, cash
Leaving town:
- TO ATL: IF Hector Olivera, RP Paco Rodriguez, P Zachary Bird
- TO MIA: Ps Victor Araujo, Jeff Brigham, Kevin Guzman
Chad went through all of those names before, and it’s worth your time to review that. What wasn’t known at the time was the inclusion of Arroyo, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery and probably won’t be able to pitch this season. (Like Morse, he exists to give the Dodgers more to pay off in dollars than in talent, than he does to actually contribute on the field.)
There’s more to come, obviously. Even if Arroyo goes on the 60-day disabled list and Morse is cut free (still not a certainty), 40-man spots are needed for Latos, Wood, Johnson, Peraza, and Avilan. You figure that Zach Lee going back to the minors is a pretty easy solve, and Yimi Garcia could be right behind him. (Presumably, Mike Bolsinger heads to the bullpen.)
That still means a few other spots will need to be cleared, and remember, that since there’s no game tonight, there’s time for deadline deals before they next play. Alex Guerrero? Alberto Callaspo? A DFA for Chin-hui Tsao, Ronald Torreyes, Andy Wilkins, or Chris Heisey? There’s enough low-level driftwood there that it shouldn’t be that difficult to do.
I know some will be disappointed that Cole Hamels, Johnny Cueto, and David Price all aren’t coming. It might be hard to convince them that a rotation of Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Latos, Wood, and Brett Anderson is pretty damn good.
But man, if you’re a Dodger fan and you don’t like this deal? I don’t know what to tell you. I just don’t.
