The Dodgers defeated the corpse of the Padres roster tonight, 6-2, powered by Alex Wood and a third-inning offensive explosion.
Wood has been good and bad for the Dodgers, mostly depending on whether he has his command on that particular day or not. After giving up 4-3-3-3 runs in his first four starts for the Dodgers, Wood has been great except when he hasn’t been. He ran off streaks of 18.2 innings while allowing only three runs, and then another 14.2 innings while allowing only two runs, but unfortunately in two starts at Arizona and at Colorado, he combined to allow 14 earned in seven innings of work.
Today against the Padres, he started another one of those good streaks that will hopefully carry over into the playoffs. Wood got through seven innings on 88 pitches, allowing just two runs, and six baserunners (five hits, one walk).
Wood’s performance made sure that the third inning was all the offense the Dodgers would need. Adrian Gonzalez got the scoring started with a single to right that scored Carl Crawford. Justin Turner then hit into an odd error by Cory Spangenberg, who made an error on an attempted toss to get a force, leading to Howie Kendrick scoring. Andre Ethier then grounded out to score A-Gon from third, making it 3-0. Things then got put into a more comfortable place after Corey Seager and A.J. Ellis both singled to score a run each, putting the Dodgers up 5-0. Turner would add a run in the fifth on a single of his own, but fortunately the insurance run wouldn’t be necessary.
Joel Peralta and Pedro Baez pitched a scoreless inning each, ending the game and getting the Dodgers to 90-70. The Mets were inactive today, and they have a doubleheader tomorrow, so the Dodgers have a half-game lead on them for now.
