So the trade deadline is complete and the Dodgers went for a bunch of win-now deals that unsurprisingly didn’t satisfy the people who complained about the lack of win-now deals last year. And what a way to start things off, as the Dodgers fell to the Rockies tonight, 7-3, in a rather drab game for The Blue Crew.
Brandon McCarthy started the game for the Dodgers, but unlike his previous efforts, it just didn’t go well at all. He threw 85 pitches in three innings, giving up three runs on just three hits but he walked five batters.
The bullpen didn’t fare much better, as Luis Avilan surrendered an unearned run (his own error) in an inning, J.P. Howell gave up an earned run in his inning, and Jesse Chavez gave up two runs in his frame (welcome to the Dodgers!). I guess the only upside for the pitching staff today is scoreless frames by Joe Blanton and Louis Coleman.

The Dodgers didn’t do much on offense either, waiting until they were down 7-0 to score any runs at all. They did end up getting three runs on five hits (three doubles and a homer) and three walks, but were never a threat to the game.
Justin Turner got the team on the board in the eighth inning with a two-run double off the wall in right-center field, driving in Howie Kendrick and Corey Seager. Then in the ninth, Yasmani Grandal continued his hot hitting, by bombing a ball over the left-center field fence.
That was about it, though.

With the loss, the Dodgers drop to 59-47 overall and 26-27 on the road, the latter of which seems like an issue. The upside is that everybody else also lost. The Giants fell, so their NL West lead is still 2 games, as did the Marlins and Cardinals, so the Dodgers lead for home-field advantage and to make the game in the NL Wild Card race is 2.5 games and 3 games, respectively.
The Dodgers play the Rockies against tomorrow night at 2:40 PM HST/5:40 PM PST/8:40 PM EST, and (I think) Brock Stewart (9.00 ERA/4.16 FIP/3.60 DRA) and Tyler Anderson (3.33 ERA/3.03 FIP/3.36 DRA).
