Podcast: ‘Dugout Blues’ episode 183 – Kenley and JT re-sign, Dozier, Yimi TJ

On this episode of “Dugout Blues,” Jared Massey (Dodger Blue) and I bring you what is possibly the penultimate episode … of 2016. You’re not getting rid of us that easily.

Since our last recording, the Dodgers have agreed to terms with two of the biggest free agents remaining — and they were their own: Kenley Jansen (five years, $80 million) and Justin Turner (four years, $64 million). Suffice it to say, we were thrilled and a bit surprised. We were prepared for the Dodgers to lose one or, more likely, two of them to free agency. Instead, the Dodgers ponied up the money to keep Jansen, Turner and Rich Hill. That was the least-likely outcome in this scenario, but also the one that is the most delightful.

The Brian Dozier trade rumors are still prevalent. It seems like things are too far along for it to fall apart, but the negotiations continue. Don’t expect to see Yadier Alvarez or Cody Bellinger in a deal, but the centerpiece who has been discussed is Jose De Leon. The Twins are also said to like Brock Stewart. My best guess is if a deal goes down, it’ll be De Leon, Stewart and a low-level, high-upside prospect like Omar Estevez (whose name has not been mentioned), Gavin LuxJordan Sheffield or someone of that ilk. Dozier’s fit with the Dodgers almost makes too much sense, and it seems like it’s a matter of time before a deal is struck. The Twins appear to be holding things up. This could be the new GM’s first move and he wants to make sure he’s getting fair value for a top second baseman, a top clubhouse guy and a fan favorite. The delay, while frustrating, is understandable. If it doesn’t happen this week, though, it may not happen.

Yimi Garcia, the forgotten man, isn’t forgotten anymore … but he won’t pitch in 2017. He underwent Tommy John surgery on Oct. 25, so hopefully he comes back in 2018. The Dodgers could use some help in the bullpen. Brad Ziegler made some sense, but he signed with the Marlins on Friday. We talk about some options and I wrote about some options earlier today.

We close this episode, as usual, with a solid Q&A session. Please keep the questions coming.
