McCarthy (R) |
McCarthy hasn’t looked as good his past two times out as he did to begin the season. In his first four starts, McCarthy allowed six runs in 24 innings pitched; in his subsequent two starts, he’s allowed 10 runs in 10.2 IP. McCarthy had a DL stint between his previous two outings due to a tweaked left shoulder. We’ll see if he can get right against a struggling Miami club (albeit a Miami club that put up 10 runs last night).
On the mound for Miami is Vance Worley, who was recalled just yesterday and will be making his first start of 2017. Worley, a 29-year-old right hander, has spent most of his career as a starter, although he was primarily used as a reliever by the Orioles last year, making just four starts. He began this year in the Nationals’ organization, but was released before the start of the season. He was then picked up by the Marlins on a minor-league deal. In eight starts for the New Orleans Baby Cakes, Worley has a 4.43 ERA and a 1.433 WHIP.
Worley was a third-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies out of college in 2010, and he made his debut later that season. Per Brooks Baseball, Worley relies primarily upon three pitches: a fastball (which averages about 91 MPH), a sinker (the use of which has increased dramatically the past several years), and a slider, though he throws a curveball as well; he also mixes in the occasional changeup and, as of last year, a cutter.
There’s not much notable about either team’s starting lineup, other than the fact that A.J. Ellis is getting a start at catcher for Miami. It will be his first time playing against the Dodgers since they traded him last August. Yasiel Puig is out again, though he’s available to pinch hit.

The Dodgers used five relievers to pitch 6.2 innings last night. Ross Stripling pitched two innings, and also pitched two-thirds of an inning the night before, prior to his ejection/near-death experience with Giancarlo Stanton.
Josh Ravin is here to help with the taxed bullpen, while Julio Urías, coming off of two consecutive poor starts, is heading back to Oklahoma City, for the time being:

Ravin, who started the year on the disabled list, has made four Triple-A relief appearances, and has allowed just one run in five IP.

He’s expected to play there when he’s reactivated — at least, until Justin Turner returns.
