Dodgers 3, Reds 1: Alex ‘Worst Trade Ever’ Wood does it all

The Dodgers had their six-game winning streak ended last night in blowout fashion, and they looked to bounce back on the road against the Reds. They did so thanks to the pitching AND offensive effort of one Alex Wood to get the 3-1 victory.

Not bad for basically the worst trade in Dodger history.

Wood gave the Dodgers one of the best starts of the season by anybody, going eight innings on 89 pitches, striking out five batters and walking none, giving up just four hits. Unfortunately, one of those hits came in the eighth and was a homer by Devin Mesoraco to breakup the shutout, but the powerful Reds lineup basically had no chance tonight.

Guy might be decent.

On the other side of things the Dodgers didn’t need much, and Joc Pederson got things going offensively in the second inning with a solo shot to right.

Then with two outs in the third, after a walk by Justin Turner and a single by Cody Bellinger, Chris Taylor ripped a double down the line to left. That scored JT easily, and Cody was given an aggressive send but the Reds relay cut him down at the plate.

In the eighth, an insurance run came from Wood. After back-to-back walks from Joc and Yasiel Puig, Wood hit a grounder down the opposite line for another run.

That was more than enough, as after Billy Hamilton led-off the ninth with a double against Kenley Jansen, he proceeded to strikeout the next three batters to end the game and notch the save.

Oh yeah, it came on nine pitches.

Decent.

The Dodgers are now 42-26 on the season and get back to above .500 on the road at 17-16. The Dodgers are a half-game back of the Rockies in the NL West, and they are currently losing to the Giants. Furthermore, the Diamondbacks are beating the Phillies, so it could be a three-way tie for first after tonight, with the Rockies in third on winning percentage.

They’ll try to secure a series win tomorrow afternoon against the Reds at 10:10 AM HST/1:10 PM PST/4:10 PM EST, with the matchup being Hyun-Jin Ryu (4.42 ERA/5.21 FIP/5.04 DRA) and Asher Wojciechowski (5.21 ERA/5.32 FIP/5.82 DRA). Ryu is coming off a rough start and is basically pitching for his rotation spot (again), while I still definitely don’t need to copy and paste every time Wojciechowski comes up.
