Dodgers 3, Blue Jays 2: Enrique Hernandez’s walk-off single caps 3-run 9th inning rally on his Bobblehead Night

Following yesterday’s walk-off win, the Dodgers were going for a sweep of the Blue Jays tonight. But for almost the entire game, it looked like the Dodgers would be getting shutout as they struggled mightily to manage a threat, much less runs.

As is becoming commonplace nowadays for them, however, a rabid flurry in the bottom of the 9th led to a late comeback win as the Dodgers walked off the Blue Jays for the second straight night to take a series sweep in a 3-2 victory.

Kenta Maeda came through with a quality start, striking out nine over six innings of two-run ball. He did surrender a homer to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but he allowed just three singles and a walk aside from that.

It was a quality start, but he still exited trailing.

That’s because Jacob Waguespack, who is essentially a Chris Young regen, dominated the Dodgers lineup. Over seven shutout innings, he allowed just one single, one walk, and one hit by pitch. He closed his outing by retiring the final 14 batters he faced.

Not the best of days for the offense … for the most part.

Amazingly, Caleb Ferguson and Yimi Garcia both turned in dominant scoreless innings in the 7th and 8th, the former striking out two and the latter striking out the side. Casey Sadler then got the 9th, allowing a single, but getting a strikeout en route to keeping the scoreless streak for the pen alive.

Of course, Waguespack had exited the game by then and this being the Dodgers, they basically had to rally in the 9th against the pen. Max Muncy led off with a walk and Justin Turner lined a ball to right but it was right at the fielder. Fortunately, Cody Bellinger followed by lining a ball to right for a double to put runners at second and third. That set things up for Corey Seager, who jumped all over a first pitch and ripped a ball to right for a double that tied the game at 2-2.

Walker Buehler was pumped.

Enrique Hernandez then immediately followed with a single off the end of the bat to walk it off and give the Dodgers a 3-2 victory.

Walk-off wins mean walk-off celebrations.

The season they’re having is as ridiculous as it seems.

The Dodgers improve to 85-44 on the year, a 107-win pace. They lead the NL West by 20.5 games, the NL by 8 games, and the MLB by 2 games.

Of course, the Yankees are the next in at Dodger Stadium, matching up the two teams with the two best records in baseball. The series starts at 4:10 PM HST/7:10 PM PST/10:10 PM EST with Hyun-Jin Ryu facing James Paxton.
