Mets 2, Dodgers 1: deGrom outduels Anderson, gets a big assist from Nimmo’s catch

Jacob deGrom largely delivered on expectations to give the Mets a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers and end their winning streak at three. The Dodgers have actually now lost their third three-game winning streak in a row, which obviously is a good thing since that’s a .750 winning percentage, but still.

On the bump for the Dodgers was the reliably great Tyler Anderson, which was not something I expected to say this year. Yet he credibly went toe-to-toe with deGrom tonight and kept his team in the game.

Basically, things came down to the 3rd for him, where he allowed a single before a no-doubt homer from Starling Marte that made it 2-0. He followed by allowing another pair of singles in the inning, but didn’t give up further damage. He also faced minor issues in the 4th and 7th by giving up doubles in each inning, but only faced three batters with RISP all night.

An excellent start that would’ve been enough in most other matchups: 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 93 Pitches.

To close out the Mets, Jake Reed entered again and got a 1-2-3 frame in the 8th.

Understandably, most of the attention was on Jacob deGrom against this Dodgers offense, and for the most part he had the upper hand.

While he faced a RISP in the 1st after a walk and a stolen base, he then didn’t give up another baserunner until a single in the 5th and seemed to be in cruise control. However, Mookie Betts greeted him in the 6th with his 32nd homer of the year to cut the lead to 2-1. They then managed a mini-rally on a single and stolen base but were unable to tie things up.

In the next inning, it seemed like Justin Turner did end up tying the game after drilling a fastball to deep center, but Brandon Nimmo made one of the catches of the season to rob him of a potential homer. Nothing you can do about that. Sheesh.

Overall, deGrom looked as excellent as expected for long stretches, but the Dodgers lineup also didn’t seem necessarily overmatched. If this is a playoff matchup, it should be an interesting one.

deGrom then gave way to the Mets pen, where Adam Ottavino and Edwin Diaz shut things down to end the game.
