Dodgers @ Guardians – August 24, 2023: A second doubleheader in six days

After getting through 120 games without playing a doubleheader in 2023, the Dodgers will have played five games in six days with three of those days coming without a completed game once today is over.

Wednesday’s suspended game continues to open Thursday’s doubleheader at 9:10 a.m. PT, with the second game coming approximately 30 minutes after the first game is completed. How have the Dodgers fared recently in doubleheaders? Since I don’t have much else to write about these games this early in the morning, here’s a look back at that:

Game 1Game 2
Aug. 19, 2023 vs. MiamiW, 3-1W, 3-1
Sept. 20, 2022 vs. ArizonaW, 6-5L, 5-2
May 17, 2022 vs. ArizonaW, 12-3W, 7-6
May 7, 2022 at Chicago (NL)W, 6-2W, 7-0
May 4, 2021 at Chicago (NL)L, 4-3L, 7-1
Aug. 27, 2020 at San FranciscoW, 2-0W, 7-0
June 19, 2018 at Chicago (NL)L, 2-1W, 4-3
May 19, 2018 at WashingtonW, 5-4W, 4-1
April 28, 2018 at San FranciscoL, 8-3W, 15-6

Thankfully, ESPN actually still keeps a page of all doubleheaders so tracking down the 13-5 record over the past six years wasn’t that difficult. The Dodgers will play a third doubleheader in 2023 when they play a pair of games at Coors Field on September 26 to open a four-game series against the Rockies six days before the regular season ends.

Who knows who will be pitching to start today as Dave Roberts said it’ll be a bullpen game to finish off the 3-1 lead the Dodgers hold in Game 1. The same can be said for Cleveland, which may mean some changes to the Dodgers’ order.

When the game resumes, Will Smith will be at the plate to open the 3rd inning. Through 2 innings, the Dodgers lead the Guardians thanks to a sacrifice fly by Smith to score Mookie Betts and a two-out, two-run double (his 8th in 80 PAs after hitting 11 in 323 PAs for Boston) by Kiké Hernandez in the 1st. Jose Ramirez hit a one-out, solo homer off Clayton Kershaw in the bottom of the 1st, with neither side scoring in the 2nd before the game was suspended.

——

Unsurprisingly, Ryan Pepiot will be the 27th man for Game 2 and likely get plenty of innings in the game.

A weird note about all those doubleheaders listed above is how often Pepiot has appeared in them.

——

For anyone who missed the news last night, the Anaheim Angels are both cursed and the worst.

——

SportsNet LA will have both games, with the conclusion of the first also the free game of the day on MLB TV.
