Dodgers 4, Yankees 2 – 2024 World Series Game 2: Yamamoto delivers, gets backed by homers from Edman, Teoscar, and Freddie, while pen … holds on

(Via @MLB)

After an all-timer for Game 1, there was almost nothing Game 2 could do to top it, and by comparison this was indeed all action early instead. A lot of that was thanks to Yoshinobu Yamamoto settling down after a nervy start, and he was backed by a trio of homers that gave the Dodgers the lead for the rest of the game. The pen struggled in the 9th, but held on to take the game 4-2 and put the Dodgers up on the Yankees 2-0.

For the most part, Carlos Rodon has been sharp in the playoffs for the Yankees, and he showed that by just allowing a single in the 1st on a good pitch out of the zone. However, he was met by the NLCS MVP in Tommy Edman in the 2nd, which resulted in another homer off a lefty for him to make it 1-0 Dodgers.

After a rough start to his postseason career, Yamamoto has looked quite sharp in his last two games. He looked amped to start today with increased velocity and all, which resulted in a lead-off walk to Gleyber Torres. He advanced to second after a groundout, which is when Yamamoto seemed to settle with a strikeout of Aaron Judge and getting Giancarlo Stanton to pop-up.

Yamamoto allowed just a walk in the 2nd and got the first two outs of the 3rd, but then missed fastball location to Juan Soto, and he unsurprisingly made him pay, ripping a no-doubter to right that tied the game at 1-1.

The Dodgers fortunately came right back against Rodon, though he did retire the first two batters of the 3rd. After that, Mookie Betts singled, and then Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman went back-to-back to stake them to a 4-1 lead.

Edman then smacked a double into the gap and stole third, but Enrique Hernandez ran into bad luck again, lining out to left.

After Rodon got an out in the 4th, he was removed for Jake Cousins, who gave up a double to Will Smith, but then got Miguel Rojas (who should’ve had a walk) and Shohei Ohtani to groundout to end the threat.

Staked to a lead, Yamamoto came back out and got his first clean inning in the 4th on 10 pitches, then repeated the feat in the 5th as well. He started the 6th despite it being the third time through the lineup, which I thought was the right move from Dave Roberts, and Yamamoto rewarded him with an eight-pitch inning.

He also came back out for the 7th, retiring Stanton and exited at that point having retired 11 in a row.

Just an excellent outing when they needed one: 6.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 86 Pitches.

Anthony Banda entered in relief and got the second out, but then hit a batter before getting a flyout to end the 7th.

For the Yankees pen, Cousins came back out in the 5th, giving up a one-out single before exiting for Tim Hill, who got the next two to complete the frame. Hill also continued in the 6th, getting two outs before giving way to Clay Holmes to end the inning.

Holmes forged forward in the 7th, getting an out then walking Ohtani and getting a strikeout. A potentially series-changing play happened next, as Ohtani tried to steal second and got thrown out to the inning, but seemingly popped his shoulder out after jamming his hand into the ground on the slide.

Update

Maybe some good news? Just hoping for the best.

Anyway, Mark Leiter Jr. then closed the book on the Dodgers with a clean 8th. At least, thankfully they didn’t come back to bat again, though that ended up being anything but easy.

To try and close the game out, it was Michael Kopech first for the Dodgers in the 8th, getting a strikeout, groundout, and a pop-up as he continued to be effective whenever the team needs him.

Then it was Blake Treinen in the 9th, and Soto started a rally by ripping a single off the wall in right, and he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Treinen rebounded with a strikeout of Judge, but Stanton hit a ball off the bag for a single to score Soto and make it 4-2.

True trouble started soon after, as a Jazz Chisholm Jr. single put a pair on, and then Treinen hit Anthony Rizzo to load the bases with one down. Fortunately, he rebounded with a huge strikeout of Anthony Volpe before giving way to Alex Vesia against a run of a couple lefties.

Tasked with getting one out, Vesia faced pinch-hitter Jose Trevino. Throwing a first-pitch fastball, he flew out to Edman in center.

Geez.

Bullpen dawgs, at it again.

Oh no, we’ve infected them.

The World Series is now 2-0 to the Dodgers, and they need to finish this.

After a day off tomorrow to travel to New York, the Dodgers will be back at 2:08 PM HT/5:08 PM PT/8:08 PM ET on FOX. It’ll be Walker Buehler looking to continue to pitch well in big games against Clarke Schmidt.
