The Dodgers kicked off a six-game East Coast road trip today, and they did so with a mostly dead offensive showing. They did mount a late rally, but all that lead to was a closer loss against the Phillies, 3-2.
======
Yoshinobu Yamamoto picked up where the Dodgers left off last time in the 1st, though not in a good way. With one out he allowed a double on an 0-2 count to Trea Turner. He later broke for third in a steal attempt, but while Yamamoto stepped off with time to get him, he threw way behind Miguel Rojas at third for an error that allowed Trea to score for a 1-0 Phillies lead.

Other than that, Yamamoto continued to look sharp, giving up just a single in the 2nd, working around a pair of 3-2 walks in the 3rd, and erasing a single with a double play to face the minimum in the 4th. Despite never really feeling in trouble, Yoshi’s only clean inning came in the 5th, where he struck out a couple as well.
He pitched into the 6th, a first for a Dodgers starter this season, seeing another double play erasing a walk so that he faced the minimum. That concluded another great start for him, with just the unearned run allowed: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 5 K, 97 Pitches.

Unfortunately, it was Jesus Luzardo opposing him, and he had it all working tonight. After cruising through the 1st, he allowed a single to start the 2nd by Teoscar Hernandez (who also stole second) but then sat down a whopping 13 in a row before walking Andy Pages in the 6th. No matter, as he then picked him off as Pages’ baserunning woes continued.
Luzardo continued to cruise in the 7th with a pair of outs to start, but Teoscar blooped a double into shallow right and Will Smith drew a walk to put a pair on. However, an Enrique Hernandez strikeout put a punctuation on his outing.

Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar did hit a couple outs a long way, but it just wasn’t enough in these conditions today.
This means the Dodgers are leading, I think. pic.twitter.com/PuS5qwGiIz

Taking over for Yamamoto out of the pen in the 7th was Kirby Yates, who promptly got himself in trouble with a walk and a double. After a strikeout postponed the scoring, Bryson Stott then singled past a drawn-in infield to plate a run, and Brandon Marsh‘s groundout plated another to make it 3-0 to the Phillies.

Human white flag/victory cigar Luis Garcia took over and issued an intentional walk before getting the final out of the frame. He then continued in the 8th and cruised through a four-pitch inning.
To end the game, the Dodgers did rally a bit against the Phillies pen in the 8th, getting singles from Rojas and Ohtani to corner the runners, but Ohtani was caught stealing to end the threat. Then in the 9th, they made that decision hurt, because Mookie Betts started with a walk and Tommy Edman smashed his fifth homer of the year to cut the deficit to 3-2.

After a strikeout, Smith drew a walk and was pinch-run for by Chris Taylor. As pinch-hitter Max Muncy struck out, and J.T. Realmuto threw out CT3 trying to steal to end it.

8-1 on the year now, but the Padres also lost, so they still lead the NL West by a half game.
The same two teams will do it tomorrow but a few hours earlier at 10:05 AM HT/1:05 PM PT/4:05 PM ET on FS1. It’ll be Roki Sasaki looking to finally gain control against one of the Phillies aces in Aaron Nola.
