The Dodger offense woke up over the weekend against the Pirates, putting up 17 runs the last two days after being blanked on Friday night. They survived another Tyler Glasnow start being cut short, this time by a much more concerning shoulder issue. Ben Casparius held down the fort for 3 2/3 innings while the offense beat up on Bailey Falter, and after 2/3 of an inning out of Alex Vesia the Dodgers were able to only use Luis Garcia and Yoendrys Gomez for the final 3 2/3 frames. The win bumped the Dodgers up to 18-10, a half game back of the Giants who won in the most 2021 Giants ass way yesterday.
Tonight, the Dodgers welcome the Marlins to town for a three game set to end the homestand. Miami is 12-15 this season and coming off a series loss in Seattle. They took the first game of the series, but got blown out on Saturday and fell short of a comeback in a one-run loss yesterday. Miami’s offense has been pretty middle-of-the-pack this season, with 120 runs scored (14th in the Majors) and a .709 OPS (15th in the Majors). The pitching has been another story, as their 5.32 team ERA and 1.48 WHIP are both the third-worst in baseball, only ahead of Colorado and Baltimore. Their 10.9 percent walk rate is the highest in baseball (even ahead of the Dodgers, who are the fourth-worst at 10.5 percent). The Dodgers took five of six against Miami last season, sweeping them in LA in May and taking two of three in Miami in September. They’ll be seeing a lot of the Marlins coming up, as they host them for three this week and begin next week with three in Miami.

Dustin May gets the ball coming off his worst start of the season. He entered Wrigley Field with a 1.06 ERA and left with a 3.68 ERA after allowing 10 hits and seven runs in five innings. The Dodgers put up three runs in the top of the first and May went out and gave up six hits and five runs in the bottom of the inning. May threw three scoreless innings to save the bullpen a bit but allowed two more runs in the fifth to end his night. The Dodgers ended up taking the lead in the game, but Tanner Scott blew his second save and Noah Davis made his Dodger debut and gave up a walk off single on the first pitch of the 10th. May’s first career win came against the Marlins in 2019, when he allowed a run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings. May returned from his first Tommy John in August 2022 and his first two starts back came against Miami. His first start was phenomenal, striking out nine over five shutout innings with one hit allowed in LA. He followed that up with another strong start, allowing one run (and one unearned) and four hits over six innings but took the loss against a complete game by Sandy Alcantara.
Edward Cabrera makes his fourth start of the season tonight. Cabrera had a bit of a late start to the season as a Spring Training blister landed him on the IL to start. It’s been a rough start for Cabrera, allowing 10 runs and 13 hits in 14 2/3 innings. All three of his starts have come in Miami, and his first start was pretty solid. He allowed two runs over 5 2/3 in his season debut, striking out five but issuing three walks and four hits before taking a no decision. He followed that up allowing five runs in four innings against Arizona, and last time out allowed three runs in five against the Reds. He’s allowed one homer in each of his three starts and has already allowed eight stolen bases, the second-most in baseball. Cabrera has struggled badly in his career against the Dodgers. He did have one nice outing against LA in 2023, tossing four shutout innings in relief. He’s made three other starts against the Dodgers, allowing 17 runs in only 10 innings. His only career start in LA came last September, where he allowed four hits, five walks and seven runs in only 2 1/3 innings in a game the Dodgers ended up winning 20-4.
Cabrera primarily throws a changeup that averaged 93 MPH last season and is up to 93.5 in a very small sample size this year (26.8 percent usage). He’s thrown a four seamer less than ever so far this season, using it only 9.4 percent of the time compared to a previous career low of 20 percent. Instead, he’s leaned on the sinker (20.5 percent usage, 96.6 MPH average). Despite leaning more on the sinker, he’s running the lowest ground ball rate of his career at only 35 percentHe also throws a curve (22.8 percent) and slider (20.5 percent).
Tommy Edman gets his first day off of the season, with Miguel Rojas getting the start at second against his former team.

Glasnow isn’t on the IL just yet.
(Just kidding, naturally now that I scheduled the post and started playing Clair Obscur, he is).
Dave Roberts said the Dodgers have not made a decision yet on Tyler Glasnow, but that it’s “more likely” he goes on the IL

Glasnow reported some general body soreness today, in addition to his shoulder discomfort from yesterday https://t.co/tS1oaydtsY
It’s officially listed as shoulder inflammation.
In other pitcher injury news, Blake Snell got an injection and he and Blake Treinen are both shut down from throwing.
Blake Snell had an injection in his shoulder, Dave Roberts said. Both Snell and Blake Treinen are still no-throw.

For all the talk about whether the Dodgers have too many pitchers. They’ll be using a bullpen game tomorrow and Tony Gonsolin will be activated to start the day game Wednesday. They’re off Thursday, but will play 10 games in 10 days beginning Friday in Atlanta. Casparius may be stretched out to start in that stretch.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM PT and will be shown on SportsNet LA.
