After an eventful game to start this series, the Dodgers and Padres had another one tonight as it not only went back-and-forth early with the scoring, but also with the hit batters as tensions flared again. Regardless, it was back to baseball at the end of the day, and the Dodgers continued to do that better than the Padres, breaking a tie in the middle innings with a five-run outburst that led to an 8-6 victory.
======
For a bit of a messy pen game, it was Jack Dreyer who started things off for the Dodgers. He gave up a one-out single that was advanced to second on a groundout, and then a Gavin Sheets bloop single put the Padres up 1-0.

Dreyer then rebounded in the 2nd with a 1-2-3 frame to end his outing.
On the other end was Randy Vasquez for the Padres, who started by cruising through the 1st. However, the 2nd started with a Will Smith double, which was advanced to third on a flyout, and then advanced home on a Max Muncy sacrifice fly to tie the game up.
They then took a lead behind Andy Pages‘ 14th homer of the year to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.

That didn’t last long.
Lou Trivino has been excellent for the Dodgers but he struggled today. A lead-off double started things, and then he hit Fernando Tatis Jr. with an 0-1 fastball that left him displeased.
A Luis Arraez single tied the game up and a walk followed to load the bases. Sheets then missed a grand slam but settled for a sac fly to tie the game up.
Thankfully, Xander Bogaerts bailed Trivino out of further damage by grounding into a double play.
But further drama followed, as in the 3rd, Vazquez threw inside to Shohei Ohtani twice and hit him on the second attempt to kick off a firey exchange that led to both teams being warned and Dave Roberts being ejected.
Tripp Gibson, in case you forgot, was the umpire who called the obstruction call on Max Muncy in New York last month for stepping in a baserunner's line of sight on a sac fly

Manny Machado last night after #Dodgers Andy Pages objected to being HBP: "They got way more superstars over there if we want to hit somebody. They’ve got some big dogs over there we could hit."

Shohei Ohtani would qualify as the biggest of dogs.
Undoubtedly on purpose there, and the Dodgers couldn’t take advantage in the inning despite another single in the frame.
After Trivino managed to face the minimum in the 4th thanks to a walk being erased by a double play, the Dodgers got back at Vazquez in the bottom of the frame behind Pages’ second homer of the game and 15th of the season to tie things at 3-3.

After a quiet 5th against Vazquez, the Padres brought in Jeremiah Estrada for the 6th. Freddie Freeman started a rally with a single and got to second on a passed ball, and things looked out of sorts for the Padres when Will won a 12-pitch epic by smashing his seventh homer of the year to give the Dodgers a 5-3 lead.

Fortunately, that’s not where they stopped, as Teoscar Hernandez, Muncy, and, of course, Pages strung back-to-back-to-back singles together for another run. That was unfortunately Estrada’s last batter.

The rest of the pen started with a wild pitch to advance both runners into scoring position, and Tommy Edman lined a one-out double to plate both runners to make it 8-3.

Back to the pen game of the Dodgers, Matt Sauer had taken over and started quite strongly with a 12-pitch 5th inning and then working around a single and a walk to start the 6th thanks to a Bogaerts double play. The 7th didn’t quite go to plan, however, as he hit Jose Iglesias to start and induced a Machado tantrum.
I guess even Gibson can't pretend the Dodgers would want to hit Iglesias on purpose.

It’s almost too bad they didn’t eject him there, as he immediately gave up a homer to Trenton Brooks to cut the lead to 8-5.
After Sauer got the second out of the inning, he then gave up a walk and infield single to put the tying run at the plate. That was a weird play.

That led to the Michael Kopech experience starting, as he uncorked a wild pitch to move both runners into scoring position, then issued a walk after getting ahead of Machado 0-2 to load things up. After getting behind Sheets in the count 3-1, he got a wild swing out of him at a ball to run the count full before getting a pop-up. With Bogaerts buried in a 1-2 count, he caught his cleat in the mound and fell over for a balk to cut the lead to 8-6 before he was able to get out of the jam by with a groundout.
Always an exciting ride with Michael, lol. pic.twitter.com/On500QcetQ

Phew.
Anthony Banda then entered in the 8th and things didn’t get any less dramatic. A single blooped into left off a diving attempt, and after a steal of second, another single followed to corner the runners. After another steal put the tying run in scoring position, Banda got a key strikeout, issued an intentional walk to load things up, and then got a pop foul to end the threat.
While all this was going on, the Dodgers offense stalled out, as they got nothing in the 7th or 8th in terms of insurance runs. Thus, it was was Tanner Scott in the 9th, which was his third game in a row. All he did was get the middle of the Padres order and cruise through a 1-2-3 frame with a strikeout to close out another win.
