Marlins 2, Dodgers 1: An Ohtani-less lineup has a brutal offensive showing

After last night’s dramatic walk-off comeback victory over the Marlins, the Dodgers continued to struggle offensively and this time there was no miracle in a 2-1 loss.

Shohei Ohtani struggled a bit in the middle innings with his command, but was able to work out of trouble for the most part once again.

He pitched around a two-out double in the 1st, and then started the 2nd by hitting Agustin Ramirez in the hand. Ramirez then broke for second and caught Shohei off-guard, leading to him stealing that base and a wild throw for an error putting him on third.

Ohtani got a strike out after that, but hung a 1-2 slider to Owen Caissie for a sac fly that made it 1-0 Marlins before he was able to end the 2nd.

He was then able to bounceback with a clean 3rd, looking nasty.

Ohtani saw more traffic in the 4th after a one-out single and walk, but a nice play by Hyeseong Kim helped him avoid damage.

But he wasn’t able to avoid damage in the 5th, and trouble started again with a lead-off walk. With one down a sac bunt advanced the runner a base, and said runner scored when Kyle Stowers came up with a two-out single to make it 2-0 Marlins.

Another single and a walk loaded them up, but Ohtani was able to get a strikeout to prevent disaster.

Ohtani continued in the 6th, giving up a one-out single and pushing past 100 pitches, but otherwise completing a quality outing: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 9 K, 104 Pitches.

Onto the pen, where Tanner Scott continued to prove that homer he surrendered against the Cubs was a fluke, giving up just a flared single in a scoreless 7th. Blake Treinen entered for the 8th, giving up a one-out single and then a pair of steals but nothing further. Closing the book was Jack Dreyer in the 9th, who allowed just a two-out infield single.

Unfortunately, Janson Junk of all pitchers really shut the door on the offense.

Things started with Dalton Rushing reaching on an error and advancing to second, then a groundout advanced him to third, and a weird play on a Will Smith grounder led to an infield single but Rushing frozen at third since it was hit hard and deflected up off a glove. A Kyle Tucker walk followed to load things with just one down, but Max Muncy popped out and Teoscar Hernandez grounded out, so the Dodgers blew that chance.

Junk then set down seven in a row before a two-out single in the 3rd that led to nothing, then retired nine more in a row until a two-out single in the 6th that also led to nothing.

Not sure why, but Junk was taken out of the game at that point, which gave the Dodgers a crack at the Marlins pen. It didn’t matter much in the 7th, as they went down in order yet again.

Miracles came in the 8th, as Alex Freeland started with an oppo single and with one out Freddie Freeman singled himself to corner the runners. Will Smith followed with yet another single to break the shutout and cut the deficit to 2-1 Marlins.

Unfortunately, Kyle Tucker then swung first pitch and popped up a 91 MPH sinker and Max Muncy grounded out to continue the trend of missed chances.

In the 9th, they got another gift via a one-out error, but of course they didn’t do shit with it.

The series concludes tomorrow a lot earlier due to being getaway day at 9:10 AM HT/12:10 PM PT/3:10 PM ET. It’ll be Tyler Glasnow looking to continue his stellar season against Sandy Alcantara.
