The Dodgers (82-56) got off to a great start in September, dropping the homestand opener against the Cardinals. The Cards jumped on Eric Lauer for seven runs in his three innings and continued slugging against the Dodger bullpen, hitting five homers in the game and putting up 13 runs. They did show a bit of life in the ninth, but fell short for a 13-8 loss. Today, they look to even the series and look to remain in second place in the NL (Atlanta already won today) with Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the mound.

Yamamoto gets the ball coming off a very strong start in Atlanta. He only allowed a run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings and struck out eight, but took the loss as Chris Sale threw a complete game shutout. The Dodgers are 16-8 when Yamamoto starts and he’s taken the loss in each of their eight losses, with the offense only scoring 10 runs in those eight games.
Lefty Brycen Mautz starts for the Cardinals, making his first career start and third career appearance. He made a relief appearance in Milwaukee earlier this season, allowing two runs in three innings with two walks, two strikeouts and four hits allowed to close out the game. He returned to the Majors on Saturday and pitched in relief against the Pirates, taking down three innings again. He gave up four runs and five hits in that game, but did strike out eight and got 10 swinging strikes. Matuz has bounced between starting and relief outings in the Minors this season, with pitch counts ranging from nine pitches in a relief outing a couple weeks ago and 90 pitches in a start back in June. He threw 61 pitches in that game against the Pirates, but prior to that hadn’t topped 40 pitches in his previous 15 outings.

Blake Treinen is back, and Will Klein was moved to the 60-day IL.
#Dodgers have activated RHP Blake Treinen from the injured list and placed LHP Eric Lauer on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers added RHP Will Klein to the 60-day IL.

Lauer was placed on the IL with elbow inflammation. Klein’s regular season is done but he would theoretically be able to return in the playoffs. Treinen made seven rehab appearances and only allowed two hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings. He last pitched for the Dodgers on June 19 and had a 3.52 ERA in 29 games before dealing with elbow issues.
