Dodgers 8, Giants 2: Josue De Paula provides the lead, a 4-homer inning for 4+1 night makes it a blowout

The rivalry series with the “rivalry” part mostly having been relegated to the background kicked off today with the Dodgers and Giants playing a surprisingly close game. Surprising not only because of the Giants record, but they ran out a quasi-AAA lineup today and took a lead against Tyler Glasnow despite him striking out double digits. Fortunately, the Dodgers came back behind Josue De Paula and a four-homer 8th inning on the anniversary of the 4+1 game to make it an 8-2 blowout win.

The chief concern today wasn’t so much results, but rather whether Tyler Glasnow at least looked relatively normal and healthy. Mission accomplished on that front at least.

The results … I mean good on paper. Five of his first six outs were strikeouts, though one of the non-outs was a Jung-Hoo Lee solo shot to lead-off the 2nd.

The 3rd started with a lead-off single and steal, then a one-out walk put a pair on, and a two-out single from Jonah Cox drove in a run to give the Giants a pair against Glasnow.

Tyler rebounded by retiring the next seven batters, then worked around a lead-off walk in the 6th to give him a quality start in the end: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 10 K, 98 Pitches.

For the Giants, it was rookie Cesar Perdomo getting the call, and he was largely effective even if he had to labor a bit.

Things didn’t start well for him as Mookie Betts led the 1st off with his 21st homer of the year.

The bats stranded a walk after that and another in the 2nd, a lead-off walk and one-out single in the 3rd, and saw a single erased by a double play in the 4th.

Fortunately, they broke through a bit in the 5th, as back-to-back singles from Josue De Paula and Mookie started the inning, and a one-out single from Teoscar Hernandez scored JDP to tie the game at 2-2.

Perdomo got one more out before he exited, and Jason Foley got the final out of the 5th to limit the damage. Fortunately, Foley continued in the 6th, issuing a lead-off walk to Kyle Tucker before eventually giving up a two-out go-ahead double to JDP to make it 3-2 Dodgers.

Sauce.

Carson Seymour followed with a dominant 7th, though Philip Abner had a real bad time in the 8th. Max Muncy (29) and Kyle Tucker (17) started the inning by smashing back-to-back homers to right to make it 5-2 Dodgers.

After a pair of strikeouts, JDP drew a confident walk and Mookie followed with his 22nd homer of the year for a two-homer night. Then Will Smith followed by going back-to-back with him for another run to make it 8-2 Dodgers.

The Dodgers pen had a slim lead to protect when they got into the game, and they deployed what seems to be their leverage arms, as Kris Bubic started in the 7th and gave up just a one-out infield single in a scoreless frame. Tanner Scott was next in the 8th and retired the side in 1-2-3 fashion.

It was going to be Evan Phillips, which perhaps gives some hints about the playoff roster pecking order at the moment, but with the big lead it was Edwin Diaz instead and he gave up just a two-out single. I mean, the Giants are terrible, but that was the best he’s looked in a while.

The Josue De Paula watch party continues on unabated, as he got another start today at DH.

You see most of the highlights, as he went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and an RBI.
