Dodgers 9, Rockies 8: All hail Alex Guerrero … and Joc Pederson

This recap was written with a much different tone, but then our savior Alex Guerrero came to the rescue. With two outs in the ninth inning, the bases loaded and the Dodgers down by three, he came through with a grand slam. Because of course he did.

Of course, Charlie Blackmon came extremely close to robbing it, but it did indeed go over the center field wall. Kenley Jansen — pitching for the first time in a week — retired the Rockies in the ninth inning and the Dodgers came away with a 9-8 win in Colorado on Tuesday night to split the doubleheader with the Rockies.

The story of the game before Guerrero was Joc Pederson and another 470-plus-foot home run. Here’s what he did to a poor baseball in the third inning.

The Dodgers also got home runs from Adrian Gonzalez and Enrique Hernandez. They now have an MLB-best 73 home runs. Take that, Astros (71).

Zack Greinke was uncharacteristically off and gave up five runs and 10 hits in six innings. Just be thankful he went six whole innings after the disaster that was the bullpen game earlier in the day. I’ll chalk this up to Colorado because who cares?! Guerrero hit a game-winning grand slam!

It wasn’t all good. Yimi Garcia had a rough time . He allowed his fourth homer since May 11, this one to Troy Tulowitzki that looked like it might be the difference in the game. Pederson hit his first career triple to score Jimmy Rollins and tie the game at five in the top half of the seventh inning. Then in the bottom half, Garcia continued to challenge Tulowitzki in the at-bat with fastballs. He wasn’t locating the pitch well, and Tulo finally got on top of one and hit it out to center field.

The Dodgers are now 31-21 on the season. They send Mike Bolsinger (3-1, 1.15 ERA) to the mound to finish the 4-game series in Colorado. The Rockies counter with Chad Bettis (2-0, 2.96 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 p.m. Pacific time.
