The Dodgers lost a frustrating extra-inning game last night, and now sit in second place again as Arizona shut out the Braves. Today, the Dodgers play their final game before the All-Star break and their final game against the Angels this season.

Clayton Kershaw is coming off one of his best starts of the season in San Diego. He completed six shutout innings in 89 pitches, allowing two hits and striking out five while walking one batter. Despite the relative struggles and inability to remain healthy this year, Kershaw has still put together a very nice season so far. In 69 innings, Kershaw has posted a 2.61 ERA/2.99 FIP and a 1.043 WHIP. Those numbers would be great for normal pitchers, but Kershaw hasn’t posted numbers worse than that in any of those stats since 2010.
Deck McGuire starts for the Angels after starting the season as a reliever with the Blue Jays. In 8 1/3 innings with Toronto, McGuire allowed six runs and struck out seven while walking five. The Rangers claimed McGuire off waivers from Toronto, and then traded him to Anaheim for cash considerations. The former first round pick has made five appearances (two starts) for the Angels with mixed results. After allowing an unearned run in his debut, McGuire allowed three runs in a four-inning relief outing in Boston. McGuire made his first start four days later in Baltimore and allowed five runs in 3 1/3 innings. He started against the Dodgers last Saturday and allowed two hits and no runs in three innings while striking out six, and then he threw a scoreless inning in Seattle on Wednesday.

While the Dodger game is going on, the MLB Futures Game will also be underway. Dodger prospect Yusniel Diaz (Dustin’s sixth-ranked prospect pre-season) will start in left and bat third for the world team. Dustin’s second-ranked prospect, Keibert Ruiz, is available off the bench for the World.

There’s a timeframe on Julio Urias‘ return.

A 4-6 week window would put Urias’ return around the end of August/beginning of September. The fact that there’s finally a timetable on him has to be good news, and it’ll be worth watching his potential role as rosters expand in September.

There hasn’t been a rotation set for the Dodgers first series after the All-Star break in Milwaukee.
Roberts hasn’t announced rotation at @brewers. Would only commit to Kershaw pitching one of the three.

Still no plan in place for how the Dodgers will configure their rotation out of the break. Roberts notes LAD is in “uncharted territory” in regards to wealth of starting options. Deemed it a good problem to have.

Kershaw will get one of the three starts, but with healthy starters and Walker Buehler ready and waiting in the minors, it wouldn’t be surprising to see form of a six-man rotation. Kenta Maeda last pitched on Wednesday, and he’s available for an inning in relief tonight.
