After somewhat of a blowout yesterday, the Dodgers and Marlins played a much tighter affair tonight, and it was a thrilling back-and-forth contest that ended up going to extra innings, where the Dodgers got walked off in a 5-4 loss.
======
Things started well against Cal Quantrill, as Andy Pages hit a one-out double in the 1st and Freddie Freeman followed with a single to make it 1-0 early.

They then got quieted quickly, as they got just a walk that was erased by a double play in the 2nd, and failed to cash in a half-chance on a single in the 4th that got to second with two outs. To complete his day, he allowed a single in the 5th to Hyeseong Kim, but then picked him off first base.
Still just 1-0 Dodgers when Quantrill exited.

On the other side, Tony Gonsolin looked dominant early, getting a pair of strikeouts in the 1st and continued to be efficient with a five-pitch 2nd.
Tony has a wide fastball velo spread now. Seems to be saving the 95 MPH like this for when he needs it. Nice. pic.twitter.com/Zyj2TmAisg

In the 3rd it took an amazing defensive play for Tony to face the the minimum. A lead-off single was followed by a one-out bomb to right from Liam Hicks, but Pages leaped at the wall to rob at least a double and then doubled off the runner at first with a 98.5 MPH throw for a double play.

Incredible play.
Gonsolin ran into more trouble in the 4th, as the lead-off man singled and advanced to second on a bunt attempt for a hit that ended up being a sacrifice. The runner then got to third on a wild pitch and a walk followed that to corner things, but Gonsolin escaped with a pair of huge strikeouts.
In the 5th, yet another lead-off man reached with a single, but Tony looked like he would get out of it again after back-to-back strikeouts. But it was Hicks again who had his number, making sure this one couldn’t be robbed with a no-doubter to right that gave the Marlins a 2-1 lead in a flash.

A bizarre walk followed, where on a 3-2 count the umpire verbally called strike three, but after some confusion granted a walk. Thankfully, despite a steal, Gonsolin got a strikeout to end the inning.

Cat Man ended up leaving the game losing, but it was another promising outing for him as he continued to miss bats: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K, 82 Pitches.

Now trailing and facing the Marlins pen, Ohtani obliterated the first pitch he saw for his 10th homer of the year to tie things up at 2-2.

Later on, with one out, Freddie followed with his eighth homer to give the Dodgers the 3-2 lead and giving Fredward the most homers against the Marlins.

They tried to rally after that as well with a double and walk, but that chance ended with nothing.
Not pushing insurance across cost them immediately, as Luis Garcia took over in the 6th and immediately gave up a hit that James Outman played into a double, uncorked a wild pitch, and eventually gave up a one-out double off the glove of Michael Conforto to Connor Norby to tie things up at 3-3.

After a strikeout, Garcia couldn’t prevent another run from crossing as Matt Mervis singled to put the Marlins up 4-3 before Garcia was able to end the 6th.

To their credit, the Dodgers came right back in the 7th, as Outman drew a lead-off walk and Kim traded places with him when he grounded into a force. After Ohtani got behind 1-2, he took two strikes that were called balls, then fouled a pitch off, and on basically a 1-4 count, he ripped a double to right with Kim going to tie the game at 4-4.

That was all they could get in the 7th, and Alex Vesia provided some stability for the Dodgers by working around a lead-off walk (and a steal with two outs) to keep things tied.
In the 8th, the Dodgers got a one-out walk and steal from Max Muncy of all people, but even pinch-hitter Mookie Betts couldn’t cash him in. Moving on, things looked bleak for Anthony Banda in his half of the inning, as a one-out single and steal was followed by a walk and an infield single that Kim couldn’t glove. That brought up Dodger killer Dane Myers, who ripped a ball but right at Muncy, who threw to Smith, who threw to Freddie for a 5-2-3 double play to keep things tied.

Phew.
The Dodgers went down in order in the 9th, so it was Tanner Scott for the Dodgers to get a 10-pitch frame and send things to extras.
BONUS BASEBALL
The Dodgers started with a groundout that didn’t advance the Manfred Runner, and after getting behind Freddie 3-1, they intentionally walked him. That paid off immediately after a double play kept the Boys In Blue off the board.
In the other half, it was J.P. Feyereisen, who is back with the Dodgers now and was just added to the roster. He issued an intentional walk to start and then gave up two singles to lose it. Great.
Still, 1-for-10 with RISP as the team and the lineup basically has four or five guys that can do damage right now.
