Dodgers 9, Angels 2: Bats explode for 9-run 1st, shocked Yoshinobu Yamamoto retires last 22 in a row

It’s two games in a row now that Yoshinobu Yamamoto has got run support, and he must be truly confused at this new way he can pitch. Fortunately, he made it as much of a laugher as it looked by going eight strong innings, which made the nine-run outburst in the 1st by the offense standup easily in a 9-2 victory.

======

Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s day actually didn’t start ideally, as after he got two outs in the 1st, a bunt single was followed by a triple from Oswald Peraza that Andy Pages couldn’t track down in center for a 1-0 Angels lead.

Yamamoto got the final out of the 1st, which also started his streak of 22 batters in a row retired. There’s not much to post about here, it was just cruise control for seven-plus innings, barely breaking a sweat.

This counts as pitcher stat-padding, though nobody deserves this more than Yamamoto.

There’s no need to pile up the strikeouts if you get them to beat every pitch into the ground: 8 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 93 Pitches.

All of this was assisted by the massive 1st inning the offense had against poor Jack Kochanowicz. Things started with a Shohei Ohtani chopped infield single, which was immediately followed by Andy Pages’ 14th homer of the year to make it 2-1. The bullpen … well, they had themselves a time.

Things got worse from there, as Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts singled, a wild pitch moved them both up, and Max Muncy hit one of the weirdest infield singles I’ve seen to load the bases.

Ryan Ward took advantage of the start to double off the wall in left to plate two runs to double the lead to 4-1.

After Alex Call of all people striking out, it was Dalton Rushing drawing a walk to re-load the bases and knock out Kochanowicz, and then Alex Freeland grounded to Zach Neto who threw wide of second for a three-run error.

As if things weren’t bad enough, Ohtani then smoked his 11th homer of the year to make it 9-1 Dodgers.

The rally ended there with a pair of outs, and they amusingly didn’t score for a minute.

They stranded a single and error in the 2nd, a walk and wild pitch in the 4th, a single in the 6th, a walk in the 7th, and a walk in the 8th, but no real huge threat.

The Dodgers lineup scored 9 in the 1st and decided it was an off-day, actually.

Jack Dreyer then closed things out in the 9th, but not before giving up a homer to Neto to make it 9-2 in the end.

Andy Pages, expert pest control.

42-23, still a 105-win pace.

The Dodgers will go for the sweep in the Sunday day game at 10:10 AM HT/1:10 PM PT/4:10 PM ET with Emmet Sheehan facing off against Jose Soriano.
