Brewers 9, Dodgers 2: Justin Wrobleski shows the ups and downs of baseball in debut, Mookie Betts back in the booth

After securing the series, the Dodgers were looking for a sweep behind Justin Wrobleski‘s MLB debut. The Brewers ruined the party with a pair of two-run homers against him, and then after the Dodgers looked to get back into it, the Brew Crew extended the lead late in a 9-2 loss.

Making his MLB debut, Wrobleski showed his potential and also showed just how small the margins are at the level.

He actually faced the minimum through the first three innings, mostly thanks to defensive help, as a walk was erased trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt in the 1st, and a single was wiped out by a double play in the 3rd.

The scoring was started unfortunately against him in the 4th as after a walk started the frame, Christian Yelich pounded a two-run homer to center for a 2-0 Brewers lead.

Wrobleski got into trouble again in the 5th after a bunt single and an unnecessary throwing error. However, he got help from a Will Smith back pick to erase that mistake.

A mistake that didn’t get erased was a two-out, two-strike double and then a Eric Haase homer the other way made it 4-0 Brewers in a flash.

One strike away from a great debut, but things got rained on in a hurry: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 76 Pitches.

On the other end was Dallas Keuchel, who is still in the majors, apparently. The Dodgers coming in with their RISP issues was perfect for him, as they stranded a walk in the 1st, a walk and stolen base in the 2nd, a single, stolen base, walk, double steal, and walk to load the bases in the 3rd, and a double and walk in the 4th.

While he exited after allowing a one-out single in the 5th, the Dodgers continued to struggle with RISP against the pen after an infield single was followed by two outs. In the 6th, they finally broke through behind a Miguel Rojas double and then a Chris Taylor homer, his third of the year. That cut the deficit to 4-2.

Following Wrobleski was Yohan Ramirez in the 6th, who hit a batter and issued a walk, but a double play helped him escape without allowing a run.

Next up was Ryan Yarbrough in the 7th, who immediately gave up a solo shot to Blake Perkins to push the Brewers lead back up a run to 5-2. While he worked around a walk and steal later in that frame, he wasn’t able to in the 8th. A single, double, and walk loaded the bases with just one out, and it was Perkins again doing damage with a single to drive in two and push the lead to 7-2.

Anthony Banda entered to finish off the Brewers in the 9th, which he did … after giving up two runs on two doubles, a single, and an intentional walk to make it 9-2.

The Dodger offense definitely didn’t have much life over the last three innings, as they managed just an error and single in that span.

Mookie Betts was back in the booth with Joe Davis and Orel Hershiser (who talked about rebooting himself).

It was another good appearance, as there was a bunch of stuff being extracted from Shohei Ohtani‘s English to launch angle to mental prep to the game being harder.
