Giants @ Dodgers May 2, 2017: Wood vs. Moore

After last night’s disappointing loss, the Dodgers will send Alex Wood (2.29 ERA, 2.95 FIP, 0.966 WHIP) to the mound to try to even the series. His most recent start, which was his third of the season, came against the Giants. It was also his best start so far this year, as he allowed just one hit and one walk in six scoreless innings, striking out five. The Dodgers ended up losing that game, 4-3, thanks to a poor performance by the bullpen and an exceptionally unfortunate 10th inning.

Matt Moore (4.80 ERA, 4.93 FIP, 1.367 WHIP) pitched well against the Dodgers last week in San Francisco, delivering seven innings of one-run ball and allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out eight. The Dodgers ended up winning that game, 5-1, in extra innings, with a four-run 10th against the Giants bullpen. As Dustin noted in that game thread, the Dodgers faced Moore five times last season, and “two games they rocked him, three games they got owned.” Moore’s first outing against them this year fits into that second category.

Franklin Gutiérrez, reinstated today from the 10-day DL after dealing with a left hamstring strain, is in left field and batting cleanup. (Scott Van Slyke was optioned to Triple-A to make room for him, which is absolutely the right move.) Cody Bellinger, after taking ground balls at first base earlier today, gets his first start there, with a — surprise — hurting Adrián González being given the night off (more on that in a second). Austin Barnes is at catcher, giving Yasmani Grandal the chance to rest.

So, maybe González will be given the day off tomorrow, and maybe they haven’t talked about the DL:

Adrian Gonzalez is dealing with his forearm and his back. He is off today, may get Weds, too. Dave Roberts said they haven't talked DL yet.

Or maybe the DL is an option, but he’ll be starting tomorrow:

Dave Roberts hadn't totally ruled out the 10-day DL for Adrian Gonzalez prior to BP, but he's inclined to start A-Gon at first tomorrow.

The Dodgers obviously know more about the situation than any of us do, but giving a struggling González time off certainly doesn’t sound like a bad idea, especially with Bellinger up and off to such a strong start.

A quick update on Joc Pederson and Logan Forsythe:

Pederson will play CF, Forsythe will DH tonight in rehab starts. Could return Friday.
