Brewers @ Dodgers August 14, 2026: Yamamoto looks to even the series with Milwaukee, Ohtani throws his first bullpen and injured catchers take BP

The Dodgers (73-49) finally got the big hit the offense needed last night, as Max Muncy‘s three-run pinch-hit homer turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead. Roki Sasaki had a really rough start but still managed to hold the Brewers to two runs over six innings and Jack Dreyer, Edgardo Henriquez and Tanner Scott held it down into the ninth inning, where Dave Roberts once again trusted Edwin Diaz to get three outs. After striking out the leadoff batter, Diaz allowed four consecutive singles to tie the game at four and left two runners on for Alex Vesia, who gave up a game-losing single for a third run charged to Diaz. Chad had time this morning after Roberts asked the media for other options besides Diaz in the ninth.

Crazy that “we need to play with urgency” guy has let Diaz blow three saves in the last week. It was a frustrating start to the weekend series that theoretically should be as must-win as a series in August could be, as the Dodgers had a chance to tie the Brewers for the top record in the NL but now find themselves two back of Milwaukee and a half game back of Atlanta for a first-round bye. They get a shot to even the series tonight, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto facing off against Robert Gasser.

Yamamoto’s coming off an uncharacteristically inefficient start in Arizona last Saturday. He needed a season-high 107 pitches to get through 5 2/3 innings, which was his shortest start since May 31. He didn’t allow a run in the game, but allowed three hits, three walks and hit a batter over his 5 2/3. He allowed multiple baserunners in three of the six innings he pitched in, but was able to work around traffic to keep Dodgers in the game while the offense got dominated by Brandon Pfaadt. The Dodgers eventually took a 1-0 lead into the ninth, where Diaz gave up back-to-back triples to start the inning. To his credit, he locked in after and got the game to extras where Shohei Ohtani hit a game-winning RBI single. Yamamoto faced the Brewers back in May and gave up a season-high seven hits, but held Milwaukee to one run over seven innings.

Gasser has a 4.57 ERA in 13 starts this season but has been pretty solid of late. He turned in his worst start of the season in Pittsburgh on July 12, giving up seven runs on eight hits in three innings. In four starts since then, Gasser’s only allowed seven runs in 20 2/3 innings and the Brewers have won each of those starts. He had a bit of a rough start last time out, giving up three runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings against the Twins. All three runs came in the second inning, where he allowed a leadoff ground-rule double and hit two batters to load the bases. He walked in a run and then gave up a two-run double. Gasser’s second start of the season came against the Dodgers and he gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings in an 11-3 Dodger win. Gasser only allowed two baserunners in the first three innings but gave up two doubles, two walks and a Teoscar Hernandez homer in the fourth for the four Dodger runs.

Teo’s hitting third today with Freddie Freeman getting the day off, as was planned a couple days ago. Tommy Edman gets the start at second and Enrique Hernandez starts at first, with Hunter Feduccia starting behind the plate.

Big day for injured Dodgers. Ohtani threw his first bullpen in a couple weeks, and Will Smith and Dalton Rushing took BP.

Ohtani reportedly threw 34 pitches and mixed in a few different pitch types. Smith and Rushing both took BP for the first time since their respective IL stints started. Rushing is set to start catching some bullpen sessions in the near future, but will not be throwing just yet.

In other injury news, Tyler Glasnow is throwing his third rehab start for OKC today. As I schedule this about 10 minutes before it posts, Glasnow’s through three no-hit innings with two walks allowed and seven of the nine outs have come via the strikeout. He’s needed 56 pitches to get through those three innings so he should be nearing his pitch limit, but could be one rehab start away from returning to the big leagues.
